In chasing down an inter-library loan of Septima Poinsette Clark’s memoir, Echo in My Soul (1962), we were delighted to find a personal inscription (see below).

Clark (1898–1987), born in Charleston, South Carolina, was a lifelong radical pedagogue, perhaps best known for developing the Citizenship Schools with the Highlander Folk School and the people of Johns Island, SC. The Citizenship Schools, an innovative literacy program, underpinned the voter drives in the Civil Rights movement and were a precursor to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee’s (SNCC) Freedom Schools.
