ABOUT DISPATCHES
“Dispatches” is a distinct and online-only project of Long-Haul that offers a place for workplace organizers and militants to share experiences, transmit lessons, and build up a store of organizing resources. Unlike Long-Haul’s mainline print project, these will not appear quarterly, but as they arrive. They will also be produced and directly edited by workers from within their particular sector.
We’ve called this section Dispatches as a nod to traditions of war reporting that have worked under that heading (attentive to what Mike Davis described as “the daily building of collective organization at a plant level and the ceaseless guerilla warfare against management’s despotism”). We also recall The Dispatcher, the longtime paper of the West Coast longshore union, which, after an accumulation of strikes and job actions, conquered control of the hiring hall, and consequently, the “dispatch” and distribution of jobs.
This is a new initiative, launching with the higher education sector and with others on the way. If you are organizing at work and might benefit from setting up a page, reach out to us at editors@longhaulmag.com.
